Dani Larkin
‘Steadily emerging as a rising star on the Irish contemporary and alt folk scene!’
The Irish Times
‘She adds a raw intensity throughout her performance, deliberate and deep story-telling that reels you in, an unforgettable voice’
Folk Radio UK
Beguiling, intense, driven folk songs expertly accompanied by guitar and banjo, Dani Larkin’s songs voyage through stories drawn from mythology and folklore, ruminations on love and relationships, and experiences of wildness, loss, love and mystery, steered with a gentle strength and engagingly calm conviction.
Larkin’s debut album, Notes For A Maiden Warrior, was nominated for ‘Best Single’ (2022), ‘Best Album’ at Northern Ireland Music Prize (2021), and Best Emerging Artist at RTE Folk Awards (2021) which put Larkin firmly on the map of contemporary Irish artists to take note of.
2022 saw Larkin tour with Declan O’Rourke, Ye Vagabonds and Wallis Bird as well as performing at Folk Alliance, SXSW, Reeperbahn, English Folk Expo, WOMEX, and a profound performance at the RTE Folk Awards. In addition to appearances with Glen Hansard and Snow Patrol, it is clear that Larkin has firmly established herself as a must-see artist on the national and international stage. Already, 2023 has seen Larkin perform her first run of sold out shows in New York at the Irish Arts Centre and her debut tour in Australia at a series of festivals and headline shows including the world-renowned Portfairy Folk Festival.
Larkin has just released Walking With Natives, which coincided with her headline Irish Tour in April/May during which she sold out shows in Belfast and Dublin. In addition to collaborations with the Ulster Orchestra and the RTE Concert Orchestra, Walking With Natives is a pathway to the beyond.
Pipped by RTE Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, Double J (Australia) and Folk Radio UK as a rising star on the Irish folk and alternative scene, 2022 was the breakthrough year for Larkin who has become an established must-see artist. An artist renowned for her unforgettable live performances, Larkin has the ability to blend the old and new within the contemporary landscape of her own experiences.
Matti Kallio ja Roope Aarnio
Matti Kallio & Roope Aarnio – Traditional Irish tunes on accordion and guitar
Matti Kallio and Roope Aarnio, have performed together since the mid 90’s, when they formed the band Perilliset. Both of them are known as genre-crossing masters of their respective instruments.
“Matti Kallio is a superb instrumentalist who extracts a wide-range of expressions from the accordion, from dazzling speed to delicate slow tempo performances.”
World Music Central
“The leading Finnish specialist in Irish music.”
Helsingin Sanomat
Matti Kallio is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer. Originally from Helsinki and now based in Iceland, Matti has worked on hundreds of albums and countless live performances all over the world. He has worked with eg. Värttinä, Hector, Vesa-Matti Loiri and Miljoonasade.
Kallio has released three solo albums. The latest one, Waterfjord, was recorded in Ireland and released in 2023. Thought to be the first Finnish musician to make an Irish trad album in Ireland,
Matti cites beloved button accordionists Jackie Daly and Mairtin O’Connor as major sources of inspiration in the genre, having met and received lessons from them both in Finland over 20 years ago.
Matti said: “I started playing Irish trad in the mid-90s and toured Finland extensively with my Irish band back then. Even though my career took me to other genres and to the studio to work as a session musician, producer and engineer, I never stopped playing Irish trad. It felt like a natural progression to make a full album of the music I love… I actually made the last few tunes on my previous album jigs, so anyone who was paying attention might have seen this coming!”
In order to immerse himself in Irish culture and make the album as authentic as possible, Matti recorded at Benny McCarthy’s (of Danú) countryside studio in County Waterford. The place inspired the album’s title, which sees the Irish name blended with Nordic heritage. Matti was joined on the record by esteemed Irish musicians Tony Byrne on guitar, Liam Flanagan on fiddle, and Colm Murphy on bodhrán.
Matti’s previous projects cover a wide variety of musical styles, from pop to traditional folk music, jazz to classical choral music, and from gospel to children’s music. He has won numerous awards including the Womex Artist Award in 2012 as a member of Finnish folk music band Värttinä, and four EMMA awards, the Finnish equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
Roope Aarnio is a versatile guitar and mandolin player, based in Helsinki, Finland. He has toured extensively both in Finland and worldwide, performing with eg. Erin, Siba Folk Big Band, Johanna Juhola, Frigg and Värttinä. Aarnio remains in demand as a studio musician, having participated in numerous album projects during his career. Currently he is also working as a lecturer and teacher at the Folk Music Department of Sibelius Academy.
Kallio & Aarnio have released one duo album, Kjós, which was recorded in Iceland in 2010.
